$400,000 in grant money available for home improvements in Ashtabula

ASHTABULA — ASHTABULA — Some city residents needing home improvements ranging from a new furnace to hot water heaters, and more, will be able to apply for help under a state grant.

The funds will be made available to needy households from a $400,000 Community Housing Improvement Program, or CHIP grant, the city received this week from the Ohio Development Services Agency.

Applications are being mailed to interested parties, who will begin repairs early this spring.

The three-year program includes several housing-related activities designed to assist low and moderate income home owners and home seekers.

Specifically, the program will include the following activities:

• Comprehensive owner occupied housing rehabilitation designed to fully rehabilitate and reduce lead hazards in several homes in the CHIP target area known as the Columbus Avenue/Lake Shore Park target area.  The area is bounded by the Ashtabula River on the west, State Route 11 with the corporate limits on the east, Lake Erie shoreline on the north and the rail lines south of East 24th Street on the south.  Funding for rehabilitation is provided in the form of forgivable five-year loans.

• Home repair grants for homeowners designed to repair one or two serious concerns in several homes for eligible homeowners throughout the City.

• Down payment Assistance/Rehabilitation for home seekers who currently do not own a home designed to provide down payment assistance up to $11,250 with additional follow-up rehabilitation assistance to undertake repairs required to meet the State's program standards.

Those seeking assistance for the any of the above listed activities are urged to contact the city’s Planning  and Community Development Department on the second floor of City Hall.  Applications, program information and income eligibility requirements can be obtained by calling Mary Church, project administrator, at (440) 992-7195.
