Grandson, grandfather arrested after tussle with Conneaut police

CONNEAUT — A 70-year-old grandfather faces a felony charge after he reportedly used a piece of lumber to threaten police who were arresting his grandson earlier this week, according to a report.

John Nemergut, 426 Harbor St., has been charged with attempted felonious assault stemming from an incident at his house late Monday afternoon, according to Conneaut Municipal Court records. A preliminary hearing on the charge will be held next week, a court spokeswoman said.

The incident began shortly before 5 p.m., when police learned a man wanted on traffic warrants was spotted riding an all-terrain vehicle through yards and onto railroad tracks in the area of Lake Short Court. Officers sent to the scene recognized Justin Nemergut, 24, and watched him walk into 426 Harbor St., according to a report. Police told a woman at the house that the younger Nemergut needed to surrender.

After the woman relayed the message, Justin Nemergut went to the door and attempted to shut it as officers tried to speak to him, police said. After some pushing and shoving the door gave way and police entered the house and followed the younger Nemergut into the living room, according to a report. While officers tussled with the man, his grandfather — later identified as John Nemergut — approached officers from behind, holding a piece of wood over his head, police said. He stopped when one officer spun around and pointed a Taser device at him, police said.

John Nemergut said he saw two men “on top of his boy,” according to report. He had a clear view of one officer’s vest, emblazoned with the word “police “ on the back, according to a report.

Justin Nemergut, who lives at the 426 Harbor address, was taken into custody on the outstanding traffic warrant and faces an additional charge of resisting arrest, according to court records.
