The Conneaut Arts Center presents ‘12 Angry Jurors’

CONNEAUT — A new take on a theater classic also represents a departure for the Conneaut Arts Center, 1025 Buffalo St.

The CAC will stage “12 Angry Jurors,” by Reginald Rose, a multi-gender reworking of his “12 Angry Men.” Evening performances are Oct. 18-19 and Oct. 25-26. A 2 p.m. matinee will be held Oct. 20.

The art center heads in a different direction with the drama, which looks in on the deliberations of a jury pondering the fate of a young man accused of murder. For the past three years, the CAC — recognizing the Halloween season — has presented original works of horror.

“We’re taking a break from the spooky kind of thing,” said Amanda Latva, “Jurors” director. “We wanted an alternative to that. We have a chance to do a serious play, and it works out just right.”

The cast is a blend of actors familiar to the community as well as some newcomers, Latva said. Nine women and four men are featured, including: Jamie Chervinski (Foreman), Anna Anthony (Juror 2), Tom Udell (Juror 3), Martha Sorohan (Juror 4), Chris Kelly (Juror 5), Sal Jafarace (Juror 6), Tammy Hagstrom (Juror 7), Rich Werman (Juror 8), Laurie Hunt (Juror 9), Vickey Barker (Juror 10), Beth Jafarace (Juror 11), Anna Bennett (Juror 12) and Sarah DeNunzio (stage manager and Juror 7 at the Oct. 19 performance).

Latva, who has appeared in numerous local productions, said she will miss acting this fall, but enjoys working with the cast on a challenging production.

“We have some new actors, and this is a harder script than some of them have seen before,” she said. “It’s fun watching them blossom as actors.”

The curtain rises at 8 p.m. on Oct. 18, Oct. 19 and Oct. 26. Tickets are $14 ($12 for CAC member) and $8 for students. On Oct. 25 the night starts at 7 p.m. and features a wine and appetizer event. Cost is $20 ($18 non-members) and reservations are required. The 2 p.m. matinee Oct. 20 includes cider and dessert. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students.
