Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Office bin now collecting old medicines

JEFFERSON — A special bin to collect discarded medication is now open for business in the lobby of the Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Office, deputies said.

The box can be found across from the department’s civil office and is available 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. People can use it to drop off a wide range of expired or unwanted medication, said Lt. Terry Moisio. The special design of the box allows people to make deposits but no withdrawals

Here’s what

you can put into the bin:

• Controlled substance medications (scheduled drugs)

• Non-controlled substances

• Over-the-counter medications

• Medication samples

• Vitamins

• Syrups, ointments, creams and lotions

• Inhalers

Items not allowed in the box are:

• Sharp items, such as needles, syringes and lancets

• Mercury or cadmium products, including thermometers and batteries

• Disposal medical waste items, such as disposal medical waste items, such as IV bags, bandages, gowns and bio-hazardous items

• Aerosol cans

• Chemicals and disinfectants, including hydrogen peroxide

• Personal care products

The drop box complements other medication collection programs held periodically by the sheriff’s office, Trumbull Ashtabula Group drug task force and emergency medical agencies.

“Dropping off your prescription medications keep them out of the hands of burglars and teen-age kids,” Detective Greg Leonhard, a TAG investigator, said in May.

Collection programs also help keep drugs out of water systems and Lake Erie, experts have said.
