Three local chefs share passion with locally sourced ingredients to support ‘foodie’ culture

GENEVA — Three local chefs are using their shared passion for great meals made from locally sourced ingredients to support the “foodie” culture in Ashtabula County.

John Senger of the Bascule Bridge Grille, Nate Rockwell of Briquettes Smokehouse, and Nate Fagnilli of Crosswinds Grille at the Lakehouse Inn will cook the first Locavore Harvest Dinner to benefit the Terra Local Farmer’s Market and the Pairings Ohio Wine and Culinary Center on Friday.

This six-course dinner will feature local and regional meats, grains and product and will be paired with all Ohio wines. The meal, by reservation only, will be served at the Pairings Ohio site on Park Street on Friday at 6 p.m.

“We are extremely excited to feature the amazing local ingredients provided by our local farmers and presented perfectly by these three outstanding local chefs,” she said. “All three chefs have worked hard to get the community excited about local food and local ingredients. It is a wonderful ‘pairing’ to be able to work with them for this dinner.”

The event will feature wine tastings, live music and a silent auction.

Fagnilli, who is often credited with starting the locavore movement in Ashtabula County as a way to boost tourism, said locally sourced foods make all the difference in his recipes.

“Farm to Table is more than a trend for us,” he said. “It’s a hunt, a treasure hunt to find the best products, to build relationship with amazing farmers and to serve real food,” Fagnilli said.

The shared passion of the farmers and the chefs is making food magic in Ashtabula County, he said.

“It’s their passion that makes our cooking so much easier,” he said. “It’s their energy that makes our food taste so different.”

The benefit dinner will support the Terra Local Farmer’s Market, held every Saturday at the Pairings site. Terra Local is a place for farmers to sell their locally produced meats, cheeses, diary, eggs, maple syrup, honey, jellies and other goods in a consolidated place, much like a grocery store. The farmer’s market will continue each Saturday through Oct. 26.
