Fall arrives Sunday; soggy summer ends

A summer already heavy on the wet stuff could wrap up in soggy style this weekend, forecaster said.

Rain could be falling when autumn officially arrives at 4:44 p.m. Sunday. That would be a fitting send-off for a summer season made memorable for its precipitation. Some 15.89 inches of rain has fallen at the National Weather Service’s Cleveland office since the start of June. That’s more than four inches above average, according to the NWS.

June was the sloppiest month of the season, bringing 7.9 inches of rain, nearly 4.5 inches more than usual. July was also damp, with nearly five inches of rain (almost 1.5 inches above average).

By comparison, September has been relatively parched, with only .27 inches of rain (prior to Friday’s storms), or about 2.13 inches below normal, according to the NWS. August was also somewhat on the dry side with 2.8 inches of precipitation (down about .70 inches from the norm).

Temperature-wise, hot weather was noticeably absent this summer. The region topped 90 degrees only eight days — twice in June, four times in July and twice so far this month. The September hot spells, however, were record-setters: 96 degrees on Sept. 10 and 95 degrees on Sept. 11, according to the NWS.

Luckily, Ashtabula County dodged some serious storms this summer, although wind and rain did topple trees and cause some property damage across the area in mid-July.

So what does autumn hold in store? Long-range predictions from the NWS aren’t conclusive: temperatures and precipitation could go either side of normal through the end of the year, according to the agency.
