Power outage leaves 6,000 county residents in the dark

A severe thunderstorm may have been the cause of a Friday morning power outage, affecting about 6,000 Illuminating Co. customers, an official said.

The power flickered at first before going off at 10:20 a.m., and keeping some area residents in the dark for 43 minutes, said Dave Dillon, area manager for the Illuminating Co.

Customers in parts of Ashtabula and Kingsville were affected, he said.

Power was restored around 11 a.m., he said.

Dillon said company officials didn’t know exactly what caused the power to go off, but strong thunderstorms were in the area at the time.

The weekend forecast looks like more rain this morning, with partly sunny skies in the afternoon and a high of 66 degrees.

Sunday, which is the first official day of autumn, should be partly sunny with fall-like temperatures in the high 50’s, according to the National Weather Service in Cleveland.

Folks at the Rib Burn Off at Lake Shore Park won’t let the rain dampen their party, organizers said.

The rib cooking — and eating — begins at noon today. The live music starts at 1 p.m. with Chauncey Shives and continues with Midnight Special until 10 p.m. under the Main Pavilion, where it’s dry.

There are lots of other concessions in addition to the ribs and a Kidz Zone for the children, organizer Peggy Davis said.

The festival opens at noon on Sunday.
