Conneaut OK’s CHIP request

CONNEAUT — Conneaut’s City Council, at a special Thursday afternoon meeting, approved an application for money through a government housing program, officials said.

The measure was unanimously approved by a 6-0 vote, officials said. Absent was Councilman-at-large Neil LaRusch, according to reports. A special meeting was needed to meet an application filing deadline.

The request to the Ohio Development Services Agency, which oversees the Community Housing Improvement Program. Conneaut is seeking $400,000 through the CHIP program, which would be roughly split between repairs to owner-occupied houses and various assistance programs, including mortgage-payment help.

Over the years, Conneaut has received CHIP grants that have helped dozens of houses owned by low- and middle-income residents meet housing codes. If this application is accepted, CT Consultants — the city’s engineering consultant — will again administer the program, according to the ordinance.

Conneaut is qualified to seek CHIP money through the Community Development Block Grant Small Cities program.
