ANDOVER —  A celebration of the Resurrection was held on Andover Square early Sunday morning as more than 60 people gathered for a community Easter sunrise service.

“We celebrate that death is conquered in all its forms,” said the Rev. Dick Elwell of First Congregational United Church of Christ in Andover, as people from area churches pondered the meaning of the resurrection of Christ which Christians believe occurred more than 2,000 years ago.

Karen Palo of First United Methodist Church in Andover led the singing including the popular Easter hymn “Christ the Lord is Risen Today.” Worshippers sat on park benches near the gazebo on Andover Square in temperatures that hovered in the low 40s.

The Rev. Bob Gears of Andover Church of Christ provided the message, urging participants to “go inside the tomb” as he discussed the scriptural accounts of disciples of Christ meeting him after the Resurrection.

He said Christians must go inside the tomb to determine whether they have committed their lives to Christ.

“Live as those who have been inside the tomb,” he said.
