UW hits 40% of goal

ASHTABULA — With many United Way of Ashtabula County employee campaigns not yet ready to report, the agency has pushed past the 40 percent mark of its 2012-13 goal, organizers said Tuesday.

Current pledges are $332,600 and the campaign goal is $800,000, executive director Randy Jones said.

Chromaflo employees pledged $10,429, he said.

Also included in the new total were pledges by employees from Ashtabula Rubber, Pymatuning Valley Schools, Kent State University Ashtabula Campus, UPS and Iten Industries.

Employee campaigns soon will kick off at Ashtabula Area City Schools, Great Lakes Chrysler, Nassief Honda and Gabriel Performance Products.

The United Way campaign raises money for nearly two dozen local charities that provide an array of services throughout the county.

United Way volunteers will determine how campaign proceeds will be distributed. The decisions are based on the financial needs of the organizations and needs of the community.

The United Way also has good news to report on the newest program to receive financial support, Jones said.

“More than 500 preschool children are now receiving free books through the Dolly Parton Imagination Library,” he said.

Jones believes it says a lot about the desire of parents to establish a good educational foundation for their children.

“Parents from all areas of the county are enrolling their children because they know that reading and language skills are critical to their success in school,” he said.

Parents can enroll their children in the free books program at any local public library.

The United Way campaign will continue into early 2013.
