Greenway Senior Residences to host women’s health event

ASHTABULA — When Elaine Christen learned about the availability of a free breast cancer screening program for Ashtabula County women, she immediately thought of Peachie Chatman as the ideal person to reach the target community.

Chatman is founder of Diva Day, an event that gives area women the opportunity to be a diva, if only for a day. Christen, community outreach coordinator for ACMC, asked Chatman to put together a women’s health event that would draw upon Chatman’s Diva Day success. With help from Johnnie McMullen at Greenway Senior Residences, the women pulled together the Women’s Health Summit 2012.

The free event is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 15 at Greenway Senior Residences, 5700 Nathan Ave., Ashtabula. Guest speakers, health information and screenings, light refreshments, prizes and music will be part of the event, which will be modeled after Diva Day, but with a heath emphasis.

“The main thrust of it is to introduce African-American women of the community to and help them take advantage of the Angel Network grant,” Christen said.

The grant, which comes through ACMC’s sister hospital, South Pointe, provides resources for mammograms for primarily African-American women, ages 40 to 65, who are uninsured or underinsured.

“It will help them get a free mammogram,” Christen said.

Angel Network’s services include transportation to appointments, emotional support/guidance through the process, health-care system navigation, referrals to other agencies and follow-ups on abnormal exams.

Jacquelyne Bailey, director of South Pointe’s Angel Network is one of the speakers for the summit. Chatman said a local breast cancer survivor will also speak.

Also scheduled is Dr. Soldrea Thompson, who will speak on menopause and open up the floor to questions on other women’s health topics. Thompson is an OB/GYN physician with ACMC.

Partners and participants for the summit also include Encouragement, Inc., founded by Chatman; Giant Eagle; Blanket Rescue Mission; and Greenway Senior Housing.

Reservations are required; call Chatman at (440) 228-5444, or McMullen at (440) 536-4632.
