More than 10,000 pounds of food to be distributed in Madison

MADISON — More than 10,000 pounds of food will be provided to Madison homes this holiday season. Thanks to the generous donations of businesses, organizations, schools, volunteers and church members, more than 300 Madison families will receive the Madison Ministerial Association's Christmas food baskets.

"Last year we delivered over 325 Christmas baskets to the needy in the Madison community," said Frank Ashton, food basket organizer. "This includes 70 pounds of canned goods in each basket, a 12- to 14-pound turkey for over 225 families and a chicken for over 100 individuals or small families."

Madison students and their families can expect to be a big part of the holiday giving since upon returning from Thanksgiving break Nov. 28, students will compete with each other by bringing the most canned foods to school until Dec. 7.

"Without their help we would never have been able to accomplish this program," Ashton said. "Our goal within the schools is to collect some 10,000 pounds of food, which is what was collected last year. If every student just brought in two items we would easily reach this goal."

The entire community can also get involved. Volun-teers age 3 and older are needed Dec. 7 and 8 to pack Christmas baskets, carry them to vehicles and deliver them to homes. Packing will take place at Cornerstone Friends Church, 2300 Hubbard Road, on Friday, Dec. 7 at 4 p.m. They will be distributed to homes Dec. 8 beginning at 9 a.m. at Cornerstone Friends Church.

Madison families can request a Christmas food basket at the Madison Food Center by calling 428-9601.
