City of Ashtabula declares a state of emergency

ASHTABULA — City Council declared a state of emergency Monday night to help with flood relief.

This comes after heavy rain during the Thursday and Friday flooding. In some areas water flowed into basements and washed out streets.

The Ashtabula harbor seemed to take the brunt of the storm.

“(The declaration) notifies the county Emergency Management Agency of the damage,” City Manager Jim Timonere said. “It determines if it takes it further up the line.”

City officials have collected seven pages of damaged property from residents, he said.

“I don’t want to guess if we will get help,” Timonere said. Affected residents can leave their addresses and contact information with his offices by calling 440-992-7103.

He also spoke Monday with State Rep. John Patterson, D-Jefferson, about getting some type of aid for residents. There’s no guarantee anything will materialize and residents should contact their insurance carriers.

Residents can continue to take flood-damage items to the city’s Sanitation Department, 501 W. 24th St., for free between 7 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. The department will be closed Thursday for the Fourth of July holiday.

Trash pickup is likely to be slow this week because of the extra burden of flood-damaged items, Timonere said.

Also, there will be no garbage pick-up on Thursday. Consequently, Thursday’s garbage will be picked up Friday, and Friday’s on Saturday.

Residents will be able to take items to the Sanitation Department next week, as well, Timonere said.

Mother Nature plans to bring more thunderstorms and rain to northeast Ohio through the Fourth of July holiday, according to the National Weather Service.

Sunshine is not expected until Friday afternoon when the weather will seem more like summer — at last.
