Police nab Ashtabula man wanted in Lake County

SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP — Ashtabula County sheriff’s deputies and agents from the U.S. Marshals, on behalf of the Lake County Sheriff’s Department, arrested a 27-year-old Ashtabula man hiding in a Saybrook Township basement Tuesday afternoon, Ashtabula County Sheriff William Johnson said.

Several armed officers descended on the home at 3901 W. Prospect on Tuesday afternoon to apprehend Jasen Beutler, who was hiding in the basement of the house, Johnson said.

“Deputies had been at the property the night before on an unrelated incident, and then got information the suspect (Beutler) was hiding there,” he said.

Beutler, who was arrested without incident and taken to the Lake County Jail on a warrant for failure to appear in Painesville Municipal Court, faces fourth degree felony charges for receiving stolen property for a December incident and a fifth degree felony charge stemming from an October theft charge.

Johnson said deputies were assisted by U.S. Marshals, as they were working together to arrest five suspects in an unrelated 16-year-old murder case on Tuesday.

“(Beutler’s) arrest was unrelated to that case, but we were out there and there was an arrest to be made, so we made it,” he said.

There is no such thing as a small arrest, Johnson said.

“There is work to be done in this community every day,” he said. “We will never be out of business. The opportunity to make this arrest came with the five arrests we made earlier and we had the manpower to do it, so we got it done.”

Beutler is no stranger to the Ashtabula County legal system, court records show. He was charged with burglary and receiving stolen property in 2003, receiving stolen property and criminal trespass in 2009, and served 18 months in Lorain Correctional Institution for a 2008 burglary, receiving stolen property and failure to comply with a police order in 2008, court records show.

Beutler is expected to appear in Ashtabula Municipal Court in March on two open cases of obstruction of official business, aggravated disorderly conduct and possession of criminal tools, court records show.
