Shea’s fundraiser at Choices

ASHTABULA —  A group determined to save historic buildings in downtown Ashtabula is planning its first fundraiser.

Showing Your Love for Ashtabula Dinner Dance is planned for 6 p.m. Feb. 13 at Choices Restaurant, 2825 N. Ridge E., Ashtabula Township, sponsored by Saving the History of Ashtabula. Tickets are $35 a couple.

Tom Burris, who heads up public relations for the newly formed group, said several volunteers have banded to support the saving and restoring of  Shea’s Theater to its original design after hearing the Ashtabula Council on Aging plans to demolish it. The Council on Aging then plans to build a new Senior Center with additional parking on the site.

M.A. Shea built Shea’s Theater at 4632 Main Ave. in 1949 for $1 million. Shea’s marquee became the focal point of downtown Ashtabula through the early 1960’s. Competition and the advent of plazas outside of downtown hit the theater financially until it closed for good in the early 1980s.

The goal of the group is to bring the community together with all its varied skills and talents and turn the city’s history and future around by not only saving Shea’s, but other historical buildings, as well.

No reservations are needed for the Valentine’s dinner at Choices, but attendees can make a selection on the menu by clicking on “event” from the group’s Facebook page at

Saving the History of Ashtabula also is taking orders for t-shirts with its logo on it; again people can use the Facebook link to order them, Burris said.

For more information, call 992-5654, or stop in at the group’s office, 4537 Main Ave., next to Loftus Books, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays.
