Ashtabula County Chapter Red Cross looking for ‘Hometown Heroes’ nominations

ASHTABULA — For the 10th consecutive year, the Ashtabula County Chapter Red Cross is searching for heroes. The Heroes Breakfast has become a wonderful spring event for Ashtabula County with dozens of people honored since its inception. Over the past nine years the nominations have been as varied as one can imagine and recognition has gone to the young and the not-so-young, professionals and community representatives. Acts of courage are mixed with those of simple human kindness. Nominees are recognized for events which occurred during 2012.

“Red Cross draws our very identity from the everyday heroes who donate their time, blood and financial resources to the organization” said Renee Palagyi, Executive Director of the Ashtabula County Chapter. “They are the face of Red Cross and our most valuable asset. We celebrate them as they make it possible for us to prevent, prepare for, and respond to disasters and emergencies. In addition, each year we want to take time to celebrate the spirit of those who have gone above and beyond.” The local chapter has already received several nominations and is looking for more. “Sometimes people hesitate because they are sure ‘someone else’ has made the nomination,” said Palagyi. “It’s better to receive two or three letters for the same person than to not have them recognized at all.”

“Ordinary People Doing Extraordinary Things” is the theme of the Heroes' Breakfast to be held on March 2 beginning at 9 a.m at Mount Carmel Community Center. Tickets, available by phone or at the Red Cross office, are $25 per person with the event proceeds going to the Disaster Fund.

Although National Disaster Relief has recently had the public attention with Hurricane Sandy, this event will provide funding to assist fire victims within Ashtabula County. It is not too late to honor that lifesaver or courageous individual. Nominations for acts occurring anytime in 2012 will be accepted until Jan. 11.

Nomination forms are being published in the Star Beacon and are available at all the Media One websites and at the Red Cross office at 433 Center Street, Ashtabula.
