Dog licenses easy to fetch on Internet

A website that gives Ashtabula County dog owners the convenience of purchasing dog licenses online is seeing more use this year than last, despite a $2 processing fee.

Charlene Anchor, office manager for Ashtabula County Auditor Roger Corlett, said about 50 tags are being sold through the site every week, and she expects that number to increase as the deadline of Jan. 31 approaches. The website is www.doglicenses.us/OH/Ashtabula.

The licenses are sent by mail, usually within 10 days of purchase from the site.

Renewal notices went out by mail several weeks ago to owners who previously licensed their dogs. A license costs $10 if purchased at the auditor’s office in the courthouse or by mail. The price goes to $20 per dog after Jan. 31 because of a $10 penalty.

If a dog owner plans to purchase a license at the auditor’s office, he or she should bring the exact change, $10 per license, or plan to write a check.

“We don’t take credit cards and we don’t have cash on hand for making change,” Anchor said.

The auditor’s dog license counter is open from 9 a.m. to noon, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Registrations also can be made at the Ashtabula License Bureau, Jefferson License Bureau, Kray Feed (North Kingsville), Pleasant Animal Hospital and Saybrook Feed. There is a 75 cent fee per dog when purchased at these locations. The license is mailed from the auditor’s office.

Anchor said the office typically licenses 10,000 to 11,000 dogs annually.

The Ohio Revised Code requires that every dog 3 months of age or older must be licensed. The requirement applies to both indoor and outdoor dogs.
