Geneva police arrest driver at home

GENEVA — When Officer Roger Wilt knocked on Kurtis Jackson’s door early Sunday morning, he didn’t expect his visit to be a surprise.

But Jackson, 22, was wide-eyed with shock. Geneva police reports show, when Wilt told the suspect he had just witnessed Jackson traveling at a high rate of speed on Austin Road, Jackson claimed a case of a missing car and stolen identity.

Jackson, of Austin Road, faces charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, fleeing and eluding, speeding and fictitious plates, police reports show, after Wilt spotted Jackson speeding.

“The car was making a high-pitched sound and it continued to screech,” Wilt said.

Wilt turned on his overhead lights, but Jackson accelerated over the Austin Road overpass and continued to the Austin Trailer Park, where he jumped out of the still-running vehicle and fled on foot, Wilt said.

“The vehicle was left in neutral and still running. The car had a strong odor of alcohol coming from the interior,” Wilt said.

Even after Jackson’s girlfriend told officers he had just returned home and he said, “the cops were chasing him,” Jackson told officers he had no idea what was going on, police reports show.

“He said he had been home drinking all night and hadn’t left the trailer,” Wilt said. “He said he was just getting ready to report his vehicle missing.”

Wilt said Jackson recanted his innocence after he was shown an in-cruiser dashboard camera video of himself fleeing from the car.

“Then he said he had no idea he had been speeding — because his speedometer is broken,” Wilt said.

Jackson was taken to the Geneva City Jail where he submitted to the breath test with a .092 result, police reports show.

Noncommercial drivers age 21 and older are considered legally drunk when their blood alcohol level is 0.08 or more, according to the Ohio Revised Code.
