First-graders celebrate Grandparents Day

ROCK CREEK — Pilgrim hats, festive songs, and Thanksgiving poems filled the gymnasium of Rock Creek Elementary Monday when first graders did their Grandparents Day presentation.

Both first grade classes, Joe Alden’s and Julie Wright’s, participated in the presentation, with all of the students singing “Over the River and Through the Wood.” A Thanksgiving poem was recited by a student from Mrs. Wright’s class, and some students from Mr. Alden’s class recited a poem and performed a song called, “Mr. Turkey.”

Wright said, “Grandparents are so important in many of our students’ lives and we’re happy to have them with us today.”

Parents brought in desserts for the reception after the program, and Alden said there were 65 visitors, but including the students, grandparents, and parent volunteers there were approximately 111 people at the event.

“We have such a great group of students here at Rock Creek so we are glad to welcome their grandparents to share in this learning experience with us. Everyone seems to have had a wonderful time and the students were thrilled to see their proud grandparents in the audience,” Alden said.

The event coincided with the students’ investigation into heritage, cultural practices that shape society, producers and consumers, and related topics aligned with the standards for Social Studies in first grade, Alden said.
