Geneva Firemen’s Club golf tournament is Aug. 10

GENEVA-ON-THE-LAKE — The 18th annual John McCroden memorial golf outing is set to tee-off at the Geneva-On-The-Lake Golf Course on August 10. The Geneva Firemen’s Club open tournament benefits firefighter’s training in the Geneva area. The golf tournament is named in honor of training officer Captain John McCroden, who passed away in the line of duty in 1995. The outing gets support from team and individual golfers and hole sponsorship. All funds received from the tournament go towards firefighter’s training and the new training center on Austin Road. The outing is popular and many golfers from other parts of the state participate.

“Last year we had 40 teams and had to turn away ten of them,” said Dale Arkenburg, Geneva firefighter and spokesman for the event. “It’s unfortunate because the event is so popular.”

Arkenburg said teams and individuals from as far away as Canton and Erie attend the annual golf fundraiser. He said the John McCroden golf outing usually raises between $5,500 and $7,500 annually to go towards the new training facility in construction on Austin Road in Geneva. The training center will be used by the Fire Department, the Police Department, EMS units and the general public for a wide variety of safety related subjects.

“This money is going towards interior construction for the next two to three years,” Arkenburg said. “It will be used for dry walling, completion of restrooms and the classroom portion of the building. The training center will focus on public education and fire prevention.”

Geneva Firemen’s Club holds the event to honor the memory of both Captain McCroden and Captain Bill Trawatha and “all firefighters who have answered their last alarm.”

People wishing to contribute to the annual golf outing can sponsor holes, with varying sponsorship perks. Sponsoring a hole for $400 entitles the sponsor to his or her business name on a banner, the rules sheet, two laser engraved hole signs, and a towel given to each golfer. Sponsorship for $200 garners a name on the rule sheet and towels, and two laser engraved hole signs. One hundred dollar sponsors will receive their name on the rule sheet, a towel and one laser engraved hole sign. Donations of door prizes are also welcome. Those wishing to donate door prizes should attach a business card with the prize.

The cost of golfing in the tournament is $240 per team or $60 per person. The package for golfers includes 18 holes with cart, coffee and doughnuts in the morning, hamburgers and hot dogs at the turn, and a steak dinner after the tournament. The first 30 teams paid by August 3rd will be able to play.

The first tee-off is at 8 a.m. on August 10. For information on sponsoring holes, donations and team scramble play call the Geneva Firemen’s Club at 466-3321.
