Austinburg Country Days Festival celebrates 41 years

AUSTINBURG — Frog jumping contests, greased-pole climbing, and a wildlife show by Jungle Terry were some highlights of Austinburg Country Days festival Sunday.

The festival has been held at the Austinburg Township Park for the past 41 years, said event chairman, Mary Ann Wilms.

“It was a good crowd... A very constant crowd,” said Wilms. “The weather has been nice for a change.”

She said the proceeds from the nightly Sky Lantern Launch benefits the Austinburg Country Days Scholarship Fund. Any high school senior that lives in Austinburg Township is eligible to apply for the scholarship said Wilms.

After the Frog Jump competition, it is tradition for the Austinburg Country Days Country Maiden to kiss a frog, said this year’s reigning maiden, Emily Gruber, 17.

“Once you’ve kissed one, you might as well kiss them all,” she said as spectators urged her to kiss the frog a second time.

Many children tried climbing the greased pole, while others watched wildlife educator, Jungle Terry show various animals.

The festival is held every year on the first weekend following Labor Day.
