Cones Ice Cream offers homemade and gluten-free dairy delights

ASHTABULA — You scream, I scream, we all scream for ice cream, which leaves Alice McCarthy sitting pretty in her new ice cream parlor, Cones Ice Cream on Bridge Street.

The shop features a dozen flavors of Marcie’s hard, homemade ice cream and frozen yogurt out of Meadville, Pa., as well as milkshakes, sundaes, banana splits and other dairy delights. Add to that, 20 toppings to choose from!

“It’s all fresh and homemade and gluten-free,” McCarthy said, noting they offer a couple of flavors with no fat and no sugar added.

The flavor of the month for September is Harbor Perk Coffee.

Marcie’s motto? “It’s not just good ... It’s really good!”

That’s McCarthy’s motto, too.

A member of the Lift Bridge Community Association and co-founder of the Business of Good Foundation, McCarthy opened the ice cream shop on Bridge Street because no one else ever followed through with their plans to do so. She believed Bridge Street needed a good ice cream parlor, she said.

Despite the cooler-than-normal summer, Cones Ice Cream did a booming business since opening Memorial Day weekend, said employee Lori Stewart, also affectionately known as one of four “conettes.”

“It’s fun working here, meeting people from everywhere,” she said. “It’s very picturesque.”

Stewart said her job sometimes goes beyond scooping ice cream. She has done everything from snapping photos of babies with their first ice cream cone to helping a bicyclist balance a three-scoop cone.

When it comes to her personal favorite flavor? “Peanut butter yogurt,” Stewart said.

Throughout September, the ice cream parlor is closed on Mondays, open noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sundays, and open noon to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Come October, the shop will return to earlier hours and re-open on Mondays to catch retail hours.

McCarthy also will feature local artists’ holiday ornaments, including ornaments showing off northeast Ohio’s attractions, such as covered bridges and lighthouses.
