Write-ins give Genevans a council contest this fall

JEFFERSON — Three additional candidates approved by the Ashtabula County Board of Elections this week assures voters in Geneva an at-large council race this fall.

The board added write-in candidates Mary Ann Hannah, William Buskirk and David Per Due to the Nov. 5 general election ballot. They join a previous write-in hopeful, Elias Nunez Jr., as well as Timothy Miller, who filed petitions for the post.

Voters in Geneva will pick three of the five to serve as at-large council members.

During the election board’s Wednesday meeting, members were told each of the three new write-in candidates met filing deadlines, were registered voters and eligible to run. The board unanimously agreed to authorize their candidacy.

They join dozens of other people seeking positions in city, village and township government this fall. Forty-six issues will also vie for attention, including a county charter initiative and school levies in the Geneva, Jefferson and Ledgemont districts.

Also at Wednesday’s meeting, board members learned training sessions are ahead for precincts workers and employees who will operate computer tablets at selected polling places. The tablets will contain voter information and will be used to help people locate their polling place at locations where multiple precincts will be put under one roof.

In other news, Duane Feher, deputy director, said for most — if not all — county voters the list of candidates and issues will fit on one ballot, saving the county considerable printing costs. Officials had feared two ballots would be needed.
