Judge Alfred Mackey to sentence Drummond today in Ashtabula 1997 murder case

JEFFERSON — John Drummond Jr., the sixth and final suspect linked in February to the 1997 murder of an Ashtabula man, will be sentenced today.

Ashtabula County Common Pleas Judge Alfred Mackey, who presided over the trial, will hand down the sentence.

On Wednesday, a jury found Drummond guilty of aggravated murder, kidnapping, and gun specifications following a trial by attorneys with the Ohio Attorney General’s Special Prosecutions Section.

Witnesses identified Drummond as the gunman and he’s facing a minimum of 28 years to life in prison.

“Even when a case is years old, it’s still possible to achieve justice,” Attorney General Mike DeWine said Thursday. “This is one reason why we continue to highlight unsolved homicides and encourage anyone with information to come forward.”

Drummond, Stephen Boles, George Church, Eric Weaver, Jawann Evans and Troy Jones all were charged with the 1997 murder and kidnapping of Ronald “Maceo” Hull.

All of the men but Drummond pleaded guilty to kidnapping charges for their roles in the crime. Each was sentenced to serve time in prison, except Boles, who was sentenced to one year in the Ashtabula County jail. Boles did not have a gun with him on the night of the Hull’s murder.

Drummond is already serving a death sentence for the murder of an infant during a drive-by shooting in Youngstown in 2003. A federal appeals court ruled Monday that Drummond should get a new trial in that case because of an error made by the trial judge.

Prosecutors with the Attorney General’s Capital Crimes Unit are reviewing the appeals court decision.
