What spring? County under snow warning

Forget the calendar — winter isn’t going anywhere for the next couple of days at least, according to the National Weather Service.

Wednesday’s official arrival of spring was pushed aside by snow that coated highways and made driving difficult. Numerous vehicles were involved in minor accidents across Ashtabula County, according to agencies.

Things aren’t getting better today or tonight, says the NWS. The region is under a lake effect snow warning not set to expire until noon Friday. The storm could dump  three to five inches of snow today and snow showers are predicted this evening and Friday, according to forecasts. Skies are expected to clear somewhat on Saturday.

Slippery roads may have contributed to a tractor-trailer truck crash on Route 11 in Jefferson Township early Wednesday afternoon.

A rig traveling north on the highway jackknifed a short distance south of Griggs Road  around 12:30 p.m. It was not immediately known if any injuries resulted from the crash, but an ambulance was on the scene.

The truck blocked both northbound lanes of Route 11 and dozens of vehicles were idled behind the wreck. Firefighters and the Ohio State Highway Patrol closed the lanes between routes 46 and 167. Many of those motorists got out of their vehicles to watch a heavy-duty wrecker work to straighten out the twisted truck. The lanes had reopened by mid-afternoon, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Spring arrived a few minutes after 7 a.m. Wednesday, accompanied by blustery winds and snow squalls that pushed snow across roads and created white-out conditions. Despite the gusts, no power outages were reported in the county as of late Wednesday afternoon, according to the FirstEnergy website.
