St. John School drama returns with ‘Godspell Jr.’

SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP — Brittney Emerson is what some parents might call “dramatic.”

The 13-year-old St. John School student is wide-eyed and waves her hands when she talks. She gives every sentence special emphasis.

Emerson’s dramatic personality will be showcased this weekend as the St. John drama program presents “Godspell Jr.” Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 5:30 p.m. at the school on Depot Street. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students. Concessions will be available at intermission.

Godspell Jr. is an adaptation of the musical Godspell.

The musical is a series of parables based on the Gospel of Matthew and the Gospel of Luke.

School drama director Jenean Kile said Godspell Jr. is a fantastic production for the re-vamped drama program, where 22 students in grades kindergarten through 12th grade will perform.

“Godspell Jr. is the easiest musical to put on,” she said. “There are minimal sets and minimal props.”

Jenica Muscio said she is excited but nervous to perform for her peers.

“We are going to be up there in front of the whole school,” she said. “I’m definitely nervous.”

Tristan Kile said he hopes his fellow students take the play, and the club’s dramatic efforts, to heart.

“We want to break some stereotypes about actors,” he said. “I hope everyone sees how hard we have worked to make this a really great production.”

Emerson said the drama club has worked hard to resurrect the school’s drama program, which has a long history, but has been on hiatus for some time.

“This has been a really fun experience,” she said. “This is our first big school play, and it has been stressful, but really rewarding from the start.”
