Demolition under way in downtown Conneaut

CONNEAUT — A decades-old building in the heart of downtown Conneaut will be a memory in just a few weeks, officials said.

The structure, which sits at the southeast corner of Main and Buffalo streets, opposite City Hall, is being demolished to preserve an adjacent supermarket. The old building, which housed retail shops and apartments, is in poor shape, said Mark Orlando, co-owner of Orlando Brothers Golden Dawn, which purchased the property late last year. The building is tilting onto the grocery store next door, creating big structural problems, he said.

“It’s totally leaning on our building,” and, as a result, causing a water drainage situation that is damaging the store’s walls, Orlando said.

Northeast Builders of Ashtabula is handling the demolition, a project that could be completed sometime in April, said Deanna Gates, Conneaut’s planning/zoning manager. To date, brick at the top of the building, along with second floor windows, had been removed.

According to the permit obtained by the company, the building — official address 289-293 Main St. — contains nearly 89,000 cubic feet of space. The new owners have no immediate plans for the property once it becomes a vacant lot, Orlando said.

More demolition is ahead for the downtown district in coming weeks. A handful of buildings in the area of Washington and State streets will be razed this spring to make room for a new Dollar General store.
