Ashtabula to pick up bagged leaves

ASHTABULA — City workers will begin picking up leaf bags at no charge to city residents next week, said Dom Iarocci, superintendent of public services.

“Workers will start picking up bags the week of Nov. 5 in the wards,” he said. “We won’t be using the (leaf) vacuum unless the manager or council directs me to.”

With the exception of November and April, leaf and compost bags in Ashtabula are no longer picked up by city workers without a special sticker.

City Council passed an ordinance in June 2009 requiring the stickers. The city now charges a 25-cents-per-bag fee for the collection and disposal of leaf and compost bags. Residents have to purchase the 25-cent stickers and put them on each of their leaf bags if they want the city to pick up the bags. The stickers are for sale at City Hall and the Sanitation Department.

Iarocci provided the following guidelines for the bags:

• Leaf/compost bags filled with dirt will not be picked up.

• Large piles of brush or branches can be picked up by calling the Public Works Department. The Public Works foreman will quote the pick-up fee and arrange for a time to come by and pick up. Call 993-8101, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday with any questions.
