CDBG to help libraries

JEFFERSON —

 Two library projects and the city of Geneva will benefit from the county’s  2012 Community Development Block Grant formula program.

Commissioners on Thursday approved the agreement with the Ohio Department of Development, which is the channel for the federal money. The total grant is $285,000.

Projects selected and the local match are:

n City of Geneva, resurfacing of 400 feet of South Broadway; $101,300 from CDBG; $77,400 local money;

n Ashtabula County Transportation Service, $47,700 from the grant and $1,279,300 from other sources. The grant provides the local match for the federal and other funding;

n Roof replacement at Andover Public Library, $40,000, with the $44,000 match coming from the governor’s discretionary fund of the Appalachian Regional Commission and local money;

n Two elevators and a handicapped accessible restroom at the Kingsville Public Library’s Simak Welcome Center, $54,800 in CDBG money and $15,000 in local funding.

Additionally, the county receives $42,700 for the administration of the funds and $3,500 for the county’s fair housing program.

In other action on Thursday, the board:

n Sent two flat-screen televisions from the sheriff’s department to the county’s auction website. The televisions, a 46-inch Panasonic and a 32-inch Phillips, were declared obsolete;

n Approved Country Neighbor Program as provider of prescription assistance services under the Senior Services Levy. The subgrant agreement is for $20,800, covers calendar year 2013 and Country Neighbor’s service area.

n Authorized filing an application with the Bureau of Workers Compensation to include the county in its retrospective rating program. Commissioners say that participation in the program has saved the county thousands of dollars over the years.

n Approved a grant agreement with the Ohio Department of Transportation, Office of Transit, for the Elderly and Disabled Transit Fare Assistance Grant Program. The grant reimburses the county for fare box loss incurred during 2011 as a result of reduced fares to the elderly and people with disabilities who rode the Ashtabula County Transportation System. The grant request is for $19,350.

    It was a Tuesday morning in Baltimore not unlike many days here in Ashtabula County this past winter. The weather was the story of the day. Talk of wind chill, snow advisories and reports of delays and cancellations filled the topic of conversation in this East Coast city.
    James Wyman, however was still able to get to work though. Well, kind of, that is.
