Two die in crash on Interstate 90

PLYMOUTH TOWNSHIP — An elderly couple died Thursday afternoon when their mini-van traveled across the median from the westbound lane of Interstate 90 into the eastbound lane, and was struck by a pick-up truck pulling a camper, said Plymouth Township Fire Chief William Strubbe and Ashtabula County Coroner’s Chief Investigator Richard Mongell.

Mongell said Sandra D. Fisher, 70, and her husband Carl L. Fisher, 72, of Holland, N.Y., were killed when the pick-up truck driver could not stop in time. Strubbe said Sandra Fisher was driving the mini-van at the time of the crash that occurred around 2 p.m.

“He slammed on the breaks, but he couldn’t stop in time,” Strubbe said of the pick-up truck driver. He said firefighters extricated the bodies from the vehicle after the Ashtabula County Coroner’s Office had completed their investigation of the scene.

“She was killed instantly,” Mongell said of Sandra Fisher who was pronounced dead at 2:21 p.m. He said Carl Fisher died enroute to Ashtabula Count Medical Center at 2:51 p.m.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, Mongell said. He said toxicology tests will be done on the driver and the results are expected in 10 to 14 days, he said.

Strubbe said the truck came to rest halfway into the mini-van. The van was spun in a north-eastern direction and came to rest just off the highway on the south side of Interstate 90, after the collision.

An Ohio Department of Transportation vehicle parked in the right hand lane of Interstate 90, near mile 232, forced drivers to merge in the left lane while passing the crash site.

Four Ohio Highway Patrol cruisers were on the scene and fire trucks from Sheffield and Plymouth townships responded.

Traffic was backed up for at least a mile during the investigation.
