Woman sought in fetus discovery contacts Ashtabula County deputies

JEFFERSON — A woman sought for questioning in the discovery of a fetus in Ashtabula Township earlier this week contacted Ashtabula County sheriff’s investigators Wednesday morning, according to reports.

The 28-year-old woman, who lives in the area, arrived at the sheriff’s department and was talking to detectives, according to Sheriff William Johnson.

On Tuesday morning, an Avon Boulevard man found the fetus in a black, plastic bag in his attic Tuesday, said Tom Despenes, an investigator with the Ashtabula County Coroner’s office. The fetus was “fairly young,” Despenes said. It is unknown how long the fetus had been dead or its stage of development, he said.

“It was not full-term,” he said. “You couldn’t tell the sex.”

“Right now, there’s no way to link it to anyone,” Despenes said.

The fetus, which was decomposed, did have a head and limbs, Johnson said. The man who found the fetus had been dating a woman who moved out of the address earlier this month, he said.

Criminal charges will be determined once the Cuyahoga County medical examiner’s office provides results from an examination of the fetus, Detective Lt. Terry Moisio Jr., said Wednesday. The autopsy and DNA testing could take up to 12 weeks, Despenes said.

Johnson has said it sounds like a miscarriage to him. Depending on the coroner’s ruling, charges could be brought against the mother, he said.
