Winter storm Boreas is heading for Canada

Winter storm Boreas is making its way into Canada today, but left plenty of travel hazards in its wake.

The storm’s mixture of snow, rain and wind has affected about 58 million people, according to winter weather expert, Tom Niziol, covering at least 2.5 million square miles by this morning.

The busiest travel day of the year, Wednesday, was met with flight delays across the country, including 10 flight departure delays from Cleveland International Airport, one canceled flight and eight delayed arrivals.

Akron Canton Airport had five delayed departures and seven delayed arrivals Wednesday, while Erie International Airport had one delayed departure, as well as one flight canceled and one arrival canceled.

Ashtabula County was under a lake effect snow warning until 4 a.m. today with up to six inches of additional snow accumulation in some areas and wind gusts up to 30 mph. This morning snow showers are likely, with accumulation of 3 to 5 inches. Tonight there is a 50 percent chance of snow showers, and lows in the lower 20s.

Black Friday has a chance of snow, but will be partly sunny with highs in the lower 30s. The rest of the holiday weekend should be dry, with only a 30 percent chance of precipitation on Sunday evening.

The storm that covered the eastern half of the country was named Boreas after the Greek god of “The cold north wind and bringer of winter,” said Niziol. Niziol called the name appropriate “since the first ingredient for this winter event is the arctic air that plunged south from Canada.”
