Pretrial hearing rescheduled for Feb. 3 for Carla Hague

JEFFERSON — A pretrial hearing for Carla Hague as been rescheduled for early February.

Hague, who is accused of poisoning her husband, Ashtabula County Common Pleas Judge Charles Hague, was indicted last month on charges of contaminating a substance for human consumption and attempted murder, both first-degree felonies, according to court documents.

She was scheduled for a pretrial hearing Jan. 7; however, due to adverse weather conditions, the courthouse was closed and the hearing postponed.

A court spokesperson said it is unlikely Hague will be present at the hearing, but she is waiting for confirmation from visiting Judge Charles Brown, who has been assigned by the Ohio Supreme Court to hear the case.

The pretrial hearing, under normal circumstances, is a status review for the attorneys, the spokesperson said.

“This is a special case so it may be different,” she said.

The hearing is scheduled for Feb. 3 at 11 a.m. in Judge Alfred Mackey’s courtroom.

Hague has been out of jail on a $100,000 surety bond since Dec. 20.

Authorities say Hague, 71, gave her husband ethylene glycol, known as antifreeze, in September. Details as to how the anti-freeze was administered or a possible motive for the crime have not been released.

A trial date has not been set.
