Energy efficiency program to be presented at Geneva, Geneva-on-the-Lake meetings

GENEVA — A program that can save homeowners money while conserving energy will be presented at the upcoming Geneva City and Geneva-on-the-Lake Village Council meetings.

The program will benefit Dominion East Ohio Gas customers who want to make their homes more energy efficient.

Farrell Insulation general manager for Ohio, Tony Rose, will present details at the Geneva City Council Meeting, Monday at 7 p.m., and at the GOTL Village Council Meeting on Jan. 20 at 7:30 p.m.

The program, Home Performance with Energy Star, entails a home assessment, home improvements made by an authorized contractor, and rebates issued to cover the work, up to $1,250. “This program will help a lot of residents in our county save money on their utility bills,” Rose said.

Farrell Insulation is an authorized contractor for the program, and Rose said that since Oct. 1, they have completed improvements in 200 homes in Ashtabula County. Rose said he has already presented the program to city managers and councils in Conneaut, North Kingsville, and Ashtabula.

A GoodCents Building Performance Institute (BPI) certified auditor will do the home assessment for a $50 fee that will be refunded after improvements are completed.

The assessment takes about three to four hours, Rose said.

“They will check all gas appliances for gas leaks; use an infrared camera looking for hot and cold spots in walls and ceilings; do a blower door test that tests all duct work for leakage; inspect the attic, basement, and crawl space looking for ways to conserve energy,” he said.

The assessment includes a furnace inspection, combustion analysis on appliances, and may include free home improvements such as foam insulation, water heater pipe wrapping, kitchen and bathroon faucet aerators, HVAC filters, weather stripping, door sweeps, and a carbon monoxide detector.

The auditor will then give the homeowner a 15-20 page report, and will email Rose the same report. Once he has reviewed the report, Rose said he contacts the homeowner to schedule home improvement upgrades.
