Lights on the Lake ends on a bright note

ASHTABULA — Many children will have fond memories of Christmas lights at Lake Shore Park, thanks to Ashtabula County’s Lights on the Lake.

The Lights on the Lake Committee wrapped up its eighth year Sunday night and committee members are deeming it a success, said Rick Coblitz, president.

“We had a good season,” he said. “We thank everyone who came out to see the lights; we appreciate it very much.”

The holiday season was shorter this year because of Thanksgiving falling in late November, but attendance per week still was higher than last year, Coblitz said.

The lights illuminated at 6 p.m. Fridays and continued to twinkle from 6-9 p.m. every Friday, Saturday and Sunday through the end of the year.

The drive-though light display along Lake Erie featured the nativity scene, snowmen, elves, toys, Santa, candy canes, Christmas tree, dinosaurs and much more. It also included scenes related to Ashtabula County, such as a covered bridge, flying saucer gas station, sailboat and a Lakeside Dragon.

Coblitz said the additional crowds were due, in part, to local entrepreneurs.

“We had Jolly Trolley runs, Tony’s Dog House tours, (Lonely Oak) wagon rides and two buses come through,” he said. “That brought in a lot more people.”

Lights on the Lake will be back next year, illuminating the Friday after Thanksgiving.
