Crash with train in Denmark Township kills 18-year-old

DENMARK TOWNSHIP — An 18-year-old male, whose name is not being released by officials at the request of the family, was killed late Saturday morning. A truck he was a passenger in was struck by a northbound Norfolk and Southern train at the railroad crossing on Netcher Road, said Sgt. Keith Palmer of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

“The truck couldn’t stop in the snow and slid into the path of the train and was struck,” said Palmer.

The 18-year-old male was declared dead at the scene of the crash by the Ashtabula County Coroner’s Office and a 20-year-old male, who was driving, was transported to Ashtabula County Medical Center and then taken to Hamot Medical Center in Erie, Palmer said.

He said he did not know if the injuries were life threatening or the man’s condition.

“I am not going to make any statement at the request of the families,” said Ashtabula County Coroner Dr. Pamela Lancaster. The crash occurred at 11:40 a.m. and traffic was blocked for several hours as investigators surveyed the scene.

Norfolk and Southern Railroad employees said they could not comment on the crash and gave a rail yard phone number in the Pittsburgh area for media information. A call to the number was not returned Saturday evening.

Palmer said no citations have been issued, but the crash is still under investigation. “We will probably gather all the facts we can and submit them to the prosecutor’s office,” he said.

Palmer said Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers were on the scene for about three hours. He said Jefferson Fire Department, Pierpont Fire Department and the Ashtabula County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene.

Jefferson Fire Chief John Wayman said his department assisted in the extrication efforts on the scene.

Palmer said the train was given permission to move by mid-afternoon.
