Author enjoys book signing in Geneva-on-the-Lake

GENEVA-ON-THE-LAKE — Family memories seem to be the binding theme for people who return to Geneva-on-the-Lake year after year, said Wendy Koile who was signing her book about the resort in front of Eddie’s Grill Saturday afternoon.

Koile, an English professor at Zane State College in southern Ohio, said she decided to keep her place in front of the famous eatery because so many people stopped to buy “Geneva-on-the-Lake: A History of Ohio’s First Summer Resort.”

“It took me about two years,” Koile said of her experience writing the book after she took the advise she gives to students and applied it to herself.

“I tell students to write about things they love so ‘Why don’t I?,’” she said of the question that pushed her to write the book designed to solidify family members of the Geneva-on-the-Lake experience.

Koile not only signed, and sold books, but engaged in conversation about the place she loves. “When they come up to the table they want to talk about their memories,” she said.

“I’ve had people cry at the table,” Koile said of the deep felt connection tourists have to the village.

“My grandparents started coming in the 40s, then they brought their children and now I bring my (children),” she said.

Julie Hallas, of Columbus, bought a book and had Koile sign it while visiting with her in-laws from Poland. She said a friend told her of the book signing and she decided to come.

Hallas said she checks out any historic information she can glean from books about the waterfront areas of northeastern Ohio.

Koile said the location was the best she has had for book signings during the last two years.
