Plaque saluting Conneaut war dead to make debut

CONNEAUT — The names of 49 people who gave their lives during times of combat can now be found on a plaque that will be featured at Monday’s Memorial Day ceremony in Conneaut.

The plaque, commissioned by Nicholas Church, long-time veterans advocate, will be displayed at the ceremony, to be held at City Cemetery on Liberty Street. A flag for each name will be in place near the podium, and every name will be read aloud, Church said.

Earlier this year Church embarked on a quest to track down as many of Conneaut’s war dead as possible. Publicity given Church’s mission helped him locate 49 men who died during World War II, Korea, Vietnam and Iraq. Church commissioned a plaque to display the names.

Church said the public’s response helped him locate many more names than anticipated. “I’m absolutely pleased with the way (the project) has shaped up,” he said.

After the ceremony, the plaque will be moved to its permanent home at the Conneaut Public Library, Church said.

Guest speaker for Conneaut’s ceremony will be Anna Allshouse,  director

of Ashtabula County’s Veterans Service Commission.

The event begins around 10:30 a.m., with a procession from the American Legion Cowle Post 151 on downtown Broad Street to the Veterans Memorial adjacent to City Hall on Main Street. Wreaths will be laid and the memorial’s bell will be rung as a tribute to the dead. In addition, at 11 a.m. the chimes at nearby First Congregational United Church of Christ will sound 49 times, once for each name on the plaque, Church said.

The procession will then continue to the cemetery for remarks by Allshouse, the reading of the names and the placing of wreaths at the city’s Civl War monument by members of various fraternal organizations. Richard Gleason will serve as the event’s master of ceremonies, Church said.
