Torres spent the weekend with his victims ... and they were dead, said Richard Mongell, chief investigator for the Ashtabula County Coroner’s Office.
Gilberto Torres, 5012 Kain Ave., is charged with murdering his ex-wife, Amparo “Patty” Torres, 40, and her daughter, Hilda Delores Garcia Rodriguez, 20, according to Municipal Court records.
Friday morning is the estimated time of death, according to the preliminary autopsy report from the Cuyahoga County Coroner’s Office, Mongell said.
That means Torres remained in the house three days with the dead bodies of his ex-wife and step-daughter.
Patty Torres died from a gunshot to the front of the head, while her daughter, Hilda, died from asphyxiation by smothering, according to the preliminary autopsy report.
Family members discovered the dead women inside Patty Torres’ ranch-style house at 5012 Kain Ave., and called police at 2:17 a.m. Monday, Mongell said.
The 40-year-old Torres also suffered a 2-inch cut on the back of her head and a skull fracture, he said.
Hilda’s 20-year-old body showed signs of trauma, Mongell said.
Patty Torres was naked from having just taken a shower, while her daughter was fully clothed, according to police reports.
Ashtabula Police Chief Robert Stell said Gilberto Torres was found “unresponsive” in the house when police arrived and he was transported to Ashtabula County Medical Center. He was treated at ACMC and released.
He remains in the city jail on a $500,000 cash bond, Municipal Court records show.
Patty Torres’ family members filed a missing persons report at 11:47 p.m. Sunday when they hadn’t heard from her all weekend. They asked police to check on her welfare. Police found nothing unusual and left the scene without going inside.
Two hours later, distraught family members called police from the residence.
A candlelight vigil in memory of Patty Torres and her daughter, Hilda, will be held from 9 to 10 tonight outside of the residence at 5012 Kain Ave., Ashtabula.
