Carrier finds dead man on sidewalk

ASHTABULA — A Star Beacon carrier got a unpleasant surprise when he went to deliver the newspaper at 350 W. Prospect Road Sunday morning.

There was a dead man on the sidewalk, according to police reports.

Newspaper carrier, Michael Gologram, said he normally walks up to the house and tosses the paper on the porch.

“As I approached the house, I saw something there that wasn’t supposed to be there,” he said. “At first I thought he was sleeping and I gently touched him with my foot.”

Gologram immediately called 911 on his cell phone.

Kenny Hammons, 77, of Ashtabula, was later pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Ashtabula County Coroner’s Office.

“He must have had a heart attack or something,” he said.

Hammons still had his wallet in his pants and was grasping a Walgreen’s bag in his hand.

From the identification in Hammons’ wallet and his description, city police soon realized he was Kenny Hammons, whose girlfriend reported him missing Saturday evening.

According to the police and coroner’s report, Hammons didn’t return home from buying a space heater at Walgreen’s Saturday evening. His body was found about four doors down from the drug store.

Hammons had some health issues and it appeared on Monday that he died of natural causes, but his body was sent to Cuyahoga County for an autopsy anyways, according to the coroner’s report.

A Star Beacon carrier for about eight months, Gologram said it was a first for him — finding a deceased person on his route, especially in a heavily trafficked area. But he could understand how no one saw Hammons any earlier.

“For motorists, he would be hard to see because of his (dark) clothing,” he said. “He was on the walkway up towards the porch.”
