ORWELL — It was a most unusual sight Wednesday night in the village when an Amish buggy horse decided to sprint home down South Maple Street (Route 45) minus its driver.
Orwell Police Patrolman Tony Rudisill said the horse pulling the buggy darted out in front of an oncoming car. The horse unharmed continued trotting south down the main highway towards its home.
No one was hurt including the startled car driver, the officer said. The horse reportedly ended up at the Amish family’s home outside of town.
“The owners were shopping nearby. They apparently didn’t know the horse was gone until they came out. They got a ride home in a van. Everything came out all right,” Rudisill said.
The incident occurred shortly before 7 p.m. Orwell Volunteer Fire Department was called out to assist at the scene.
