Sunday Christmas concert is a gift to the community

JEFFERSON — Classical and Celtic sounds of Christmas will fill the sanctuary of Jefferson Congregational Church with holiday cheer on Sunday afternoon.
A free concert, sponsored by the Jefferson Historical Society, will begin at 3 p.m. and is a gift to the community for all of its wonderful support, said Barbara Hamilton, Jefferson Historical Society volunteer.
“We are very grateful to the Congregational Church for being so gracious to us, by allowing us to use their beautiful building with wonderful acoustics,” Hamilton said.
The featured artists for the event are Timothy Kalil, pianist; Hannah Laing, violinist and vocalist; and Tammy Laing, pianist and vocalist.
“We are very honored to have Dr. Kalil back again this year, as well as Hannah and Tammy Laing,” Hamilton said. “The music is just beautiful.”
Kalil is a touring concert pianist and guest lecturer at college music schools across the United States. He holds a Ph.D. in musicology-ethnomusicology from Kent State University. In 2009, Kalil’s performances include a solo piano recital at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Ashtabula, and a solo piano recital by invitation at the Cleveland Clinic’s noontime Concerts in the Sky series at the Miller Pavilion in Cleveland. He is also an author with 12 books and articles about American music to his credit.
“I just enjoy playing here in Jefferson at this church and this wonderful piano,” Kalil said. “Hannah is a very fine musician, and working with Barbara is a very pleasant experience. I am honored to be here to share my gifts with this community,” he said.
Like Kalil, Hannah Laing, 20, has a passion for sharing her love of music through her violin. She has been studying the violin for 10 years and holds an associate’s degree in music. Currently, Laing teaches violin privately out of her Jefferson home, and teaches music at the Redstone Schoolhouse in Rock Creek.
“I enjoy being able to share what God has given me with other people,” Hannah Laing said. “I hope people hear through the music on Sunday a reflection of God. I want my violin to speak through me what God would have for them this Christmas.”
The Jefferson Congregational Church is located at 41 E. Jefferson St., Jefferson.
