JEFFERSON — Two brothers were arrested after leading Ashtabula County sheriff’s deputies on an hours-long manhunt through woods and high snow early Tuesday morning, according to reports.
The men, suspected of stealing an all-terrain vehicle from a Sheffield Township residence, were apprehended some five hours after the initial call, deputies said.
Deputies charged Dale York, 24, of Ashtabula, and Allan York, 21, of Jefferson, with breaking-and-entering, grand theft, receiving stolen property and possession of criminal tools, according to reports.
The incident began at 2:41 a.m., when the Griggs Road victim called to report the theft of a $3,500 ATV from a locked garage. A deputy responding to the complaint spotted an oncoming vehicle towing an ATV on Griggs, according to the report. The deputy turned around to investigate and, moments later, found the vehicle and the ATV had slid off the road. The ATV was the one reported missing by its owner, deputies said.
Two sets of footprints in the snow led from the vehicle to nearby woods. Deputies — assisted by a canine unit — followed the winding tracks for hours. The original search team was bolstered by deputies arriving to work the day shift, according to reports.
Around 7:30 a.m., a resident living near Route 167 and Route 11 reported seeing two men standing near his house. Deputies converged on the address and made the arrests.
“Are you guys tired from running from the cops all night?” one deputy asked the men, according to a report. Yes, was the answer, the brothers adding they were “very, very cold,” deputies said.
Allan and Dale York did not give statements to the deputies, according to a report.
