PLYMOUTH TOWNSHIP — Firefighters fought cold, windy and slippery conditions Wednesday afternoon to extinguish a barn fire at 1500 Plymouth Ridge Road.
No one was injured.
The owner, Kevin Campbell, said he has lived at the address for nine years and had grown attached to the rustic old barn on the property.
His girlfriend, Lori Radwancky, just happened to stop at the house for a few minutes when she spotted trouble.
“I saw flames and realized the barn was on fire,” she said. “I have no idea what started it.”
She called the Plymouth Volunteer Fire Department at 1:40 p.m. and telephoned Campbell at work.
“I love that barn,” she said.
No animals were in the barn.
Campbell rushed home and immediately moved a vehicle away from the barn. He said he didn’t know what to do. He contemplated getting his backhoe and “throwing snow” on the fire, he said.
“The electricity (to the barn) has been shut off since Labor Day,” he said.
He said he couldn’t figure out what started the fire.
Leaping flames could be seen in the doorway of the structure, but actual damage to the structure appeared to be minor.
The fire department arrived at about 1:55 p.m., with the Kingsville Township Fire Department not far behind.
Plymouth firefighter Ben Moisio said Chief Bill Strubbe is investigating the cause and getting estimates of amount of damage.
Campbell said he knew he lost his son’s basketball hoop, which stood in the doorway of the barn.
