ASHTABULA — A man was struck by an oncoming repair van Monday evening as he crossed South Main Avenue.
The man, who officers would not identify at the scene, suffered a broken leg, witness Debbie Bryner said.
Bryner was driving behind the repair van at the time of the accident.
“All I saw was this man go flying,” she said. “I jumped out (of my car) and held his head until the paramedics got here.”
The victim was transported to the Ashtabula County Medical Center by Community Care Ambulance.
Bryner said the man was dazed at first, but then became coherent and very aware of what happened.
“He was moving his head and neck and he tried to get up,” she said. “We all kept him still and it was obvious that his leg was broken.”
The driver of the white van told officers he “didn’t have enough time to react.”
The man was struck just south of Perry’s Park News along the Ashtabula gulf.
Bryner said the weather made even the lighted road difficult to see.
“It is so dark and rainy and (the victim) is wearing dark clothes,” Bryner said. “The rain made it hard to see for anyone.”
