ASHTABULA — An armed robbery turned into an unwelcome tea party early Friday when the robbers discovered the money bag was filled with iced tea, not dollar bills.
Police are on the look-out for two men who followed a West Avenue businessman to his Michigan Avenue residence shortly before 1 a.m. Friday, stuck a gun in his face and demanded what they believed to be a bag of money, Ashtabula Police Sgt. John Koski said.
“The two guys were waiting at his house,” Koski said. “One was carrying a handgun.”
The victim described his assailants as a white male, 6-foot to 6-foot, 2-inches-tall with a gray hoodie, and a white male, 5-foot, 8-inches to 5-foot,10-inches tall, wearing unknown clothing. Both men are described as being in their late teens, early 20s, police said.
Police and the business owner are reviewing the video surveillance tapes at the business on West Avenue to see if the men possibly patronized the business Thursday at any time, police said.
“We believe it may be an inside job,” Koski said. “The owner was fortunate to have left the money bag at the office.”
