CONNEAUT — City Council’s choice for city manager signed a contract Wednesday afternoon, and the six-month job search could be finalized at council’s Monday meeting.
Robert Schaumleffel Jr. formally approved an agreement during a visit to Conneaut, said Council President James Jones. Council is expected to follow suit next week, he said.
The contract, which pays Schaumleffel $76,900 annually, stipulates he begin work on or before Dec. 1, Jones said. Schaumleffel has indicated he will pay a few visits to City Hall over the next few days, he said.
Jones gave Schaumleffel and his wife a tour of the town Wednesday, he said. After spending the afternoon with the manager-to-be, Jones said he is convinced the hire was a good thing for the city.
“Council made a good decision,” he said.
The new manager comes some six months after Douglas Lewis resigned to work for the city of Painesville. Lewis, Conneaut’s fourth city manager, spent four years at the helm.
Two men served as interim manager until a full-timer was found. Edward Somppi of Conneaut spent nearly four months on the job before resigning. He was followed by Finance Director John Williams, who agreed to take on the extra responsibility for no additional compensation.
Schaumleffel has spent more than 30 years in village, city and county administration. Most recently, he worked 3 1/2 years as city manager for Creedmoor, N.C. He is presently living in the Columbus area.
Schaumleffel was one of three finalists interviewed by council a few weeks ago. Three dozen people applied for the job, officials said.
