Wayne Cavinder saw “fire in the sky” about a year ago, but nobody believed him.

On Wednesday, he believes the truth is out there.

“I saw a big ball of fire with a flame behind it,” said Cavinder, 47, of Monroe Township. “I called the police, and they acted like I was crazy. Now, after other local UFO sightings have been reported, I’m vindicated.”

Jeni Collins, 42, of Ashtabula, shares Cavinder’s sentiments.

“I see aircraft with lights moving up and down, flying over the lake all the time,” she said. “I believe there’s something going on out there ... Maybe it has to do with the nuclear power plant; I don’t know. But I see them; I know they are out there.”

Aaron Clark, one of many investigators of unidentified flying objects (UFOs) and a member of the Cleveland Ufology Project, hears from people like Cavinder and Collins all the time.

“We are interested,” he said. “We talk to people who see UFOs. We take a look at videos.”

Clark is investigating last Thursday’s UFO sighting in Madison Township, which sent local police officers looking for what they thought was a crashed ultralight plane. Despite four hours of searching, officials found no plane and now believe the object may have been a meteor, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Department.

Police checked with area airports and ultralight owners but found no report of a missing plane or pilot. They ended their search when they couldn’t find any debris.

“It’s really strange they did not find anything,” Clark said.

After having talked to a university science professor, Clark said he does not believe it was a meteor. The description doesn’t match, he said.

“It wasn’t a plane, and it wasn’t a meteor,” Clark said. “With those things eliminated, maybe somebody launched a small rocket, or maybe it’s intelligent life we are looking for.”

Clark talked to one witness to Thursday’s sighting who said it was a white light, while another said it was an orange light.

“The color of the light is different with each witness, but the location remains the same,” he said: Madison Township, north of Route 20.

At the end of the day, no one knew anything for sure, except that it was a UFO.
