FEATHER - Staff Writer - cfeather@starbeacon.com Star Beacon GENEVA-ON-THE-LAKE — The mild weather was more fitting to Easter than Thanksgiving and Christmas, but on Wednesday afternoon three area florists gathered at the Lodge and Conference Center at Geneva-on-the-Lake to deck the lobby for the holidays.
Robin Klipp, retail supervisor for the lodge, said lobby decorations previously were handled in-house, but this year they opened it to outside florists. Three florists responded to that call: The Wooden Apple in North Kingsville and Flowers Dunn Right and Flowers on the Avenue in Ashtabula. The florists volunteered to do the decorating in exchange for the exposure their work will receive. Flowers Dunn Right did the entry, Flowers on the Avenue provided table top displays and Pam Palermo of The Wooden Apple decorated the lobby’s focal point, the massive stone fireplace. The heat put out by the hearth provided a special challenge for Palermo, who made a large garland swag to hang above the opening. She also created trees from natural materials to provide accents on the side. “I’m using white birch in front of the fireplace and potted amaryllis,” she said. “All of the material is made of silk because of the longevity that the lodge wants.” Flowers on the Avenue’s designers Allison Campbell and Pam Shilling also turned to natural materials and silk flowers in designing their table pieces. They make use of branches, pine cones, Spanish moss, grape vines and artificial berry pods. Bouquets of white and red silk roses provide a contrast to these natural materials. The lodge is gearing up for what they hope will be a busy holiday season. Klipp said the centerpiece of the activity will be 12 Days of Holidays at the Lodge, which kicks off Dec. 19 with a breakfast with Santa followed by a coloring contest for children. Each day thereafter, a new event or attraction will be added to the schedule. Some of the events planned for the 12-day celebration include a display of gingerbread houses built by lodge associates, frosty bingo, snowman bowling, a children’s gift-shopping event in the lodge’s gift shop and movies in the lobby beginning Christmas night. Students from the Ashtabula County Joint Vocational School will be at the lodge after Christmas Day to help youngsters make craft items. The decorations by local florists will be displayed throughout the season. Klipp said ballots will be available in the lobby so guests can vote on their favorite decorations.
