ASHTABULA — Thousands of area residents were without power Saturday afternoon after lightning struck a substation.
Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co. Area Manager Mark Jones said the lightning strike caused a circuit out of the substation to trip. About 5,700 people had power restored within about 20 minutes with the remaining 270 to 300 customers being without power for just more than an hour, he said.
“They switched over one of the lines at the substation and were able to restore power,” he said.
Customers throughout the city and portions of Ashtabula Township were affected by the outage. The outage occurred at about 4:10 p.m., just as a storm rolled in causing heavy rains and fierce winds.
The Star Beacon received reports of the outage from the Harbor area all the way to the Bunker Hill area. Jones said he is unsure as to where the outage originated.
